Black-crowned Night-Heron 6 all perched on pillars alongside the road bridge, facing out to the water; size, colour & head streamers distinctive even at 40mph in the dark.

Shamrock Park, Sarasota, FL, USA, 20-Mar-2013

Florida Scrub-Jay 2 total; first one on the way back up the firebreak path. It was calling from a low shrub which it continued to do for a few minutes, it then flew directly towards where we were standing on the path observing it, coming closer & closer until it alighted on my head for a couple of seconds! It then flew back to another nearby shrub where it continued to call, moving slightly away from the path as we left it. The second was atop a small tree on the way to the visitors' centre. It called for 10 minutes or so before a gust of wind caused it to take wing.

Royal Tern X - a group of about a dozen flew over the carpark towards the intercoastal as we left.

Red-bellied Woodpecker 2 total; one on dead tree at end of firebreak path, another about halfway back up the path, repeatedly coming in to a patch on the ground before flying back to a thick tree branch.

Carolina Wren 1 heard singing & briefly glimpsed as it flitted down into undergrowth.
Northern Mockingbird X - several around apparently staking out territories?
Palm Warbler 3 individuals flitting low down at intervals along the path, with chestnut heads.
Pine Warbler X - several in the trees throughout.

Comments: Driving to Celery Fields reserve bird-life seemingly abounding on the side of the highway.
12 species
Wood Stork 1 soaring over Exit 206; a large bird, obvious identification, life-tick.
Anhinga 1
Great Egret X
Snowy Egret X
Black Vulture X
Turkey Vulture X
Osprey 1 near Exit 210.
Northern Harrier 1 ringtail at Exit 210.
Bald Eagle 2 along the way, flying near to the highway, close enough to see the white head, giving the impression of being a fairly common bird in the area. Life-tick.
American Kestrel 2 separately hunting in fields along the road.
Loggerhead Shrike 1 perched on a fencepost on some road-side ranch-land. Distinct profile, colouring and distribution identified even from a fleeting look. I could only hope for a closer, longer look. Life-tick.
Fish Crow 1 obviously smaller than American crow, & the more numerous crow in Florida. Life-tick.

Audubon Celery Fields, Sarasota, Sarasota, FL, USA, 19-Nov-2012

Roseate Spoonbill 14 total; at first a few seen with some wood storks as we approached the Coburn Road side. I took photos of their beautiful plumage as they eventually moved away out of sight. As we continued on, more were seen on a larger pond with other species reaching good numbers. A mowing machine then caused them all to take flight & move to the middle of the big pond allowing an accurate count. Unmistakable bird: life-tick.

Northern Harrier 1 ringtail over the sides of the large pond away from the rest of the reserve.
Bald Eagle 3 overhead at various points.
Red-shouldered Hawk 2 total; the first one perched on a birdhouse in the middle of the main pond. Smaller than red-tail but distinctively a buteo. Later another appeared & their call along with mottled chest identified them. This couple then perched atop one of the high floodlights on the road next to the reserve where they stayed until we left.
Common Gallinule 2 in the ditch between the elevated path & the end of the reserve on the Coburn Road side. A brief look but unmistakable. Life-tick.
American Coot X
Limpkin 6 total; first one seen grazing by the side of the creek-like section of the first pond. It was 20ft away & carried on for 10-20 minutes occasionally vocalizing. It moved gradually away & eventually took wing. 4 more were seen later in flight from the carpark as we waited to get picked up. Easy to identify: life-tick
Laughing Gull 12 at Ackerman Lake visible from the elevated path at the back of celery fields.
Forster's Tern 1 or 2 roving over the ponds.
Belted Kingfisher 4 total; 2 near the large back pond, then 2 more towards the Coburn Road side.
Eastern Meadowlark 1 seen from the path coming down the mound in a small grassy area adjacent to creek-like section of first pond. Its head was just above the grass & as it moved its brilliant yellow couloir was also revealed. It staying still for a while before moving out of sight. On the way back I saw it again in more or less the same spot for closer & longer looks with photos. An amazing looking, beautiful bird. Life-tick.
Boat-tailed Grackle X - one & twos, & a group of approx. 20 at the end as we waited to picked up.

Mottled Duck 2 over; darkish all over, a distinctive duck of the region. Life-tick.
Wood Stork 6 total; two or three seen flying around on the approach & from the carpark, then a few more in the smaller pools at the far end from the carpark.

Anhinga 2 , a couple on a bush next to a narrow, creek-like section of the largest pond adjacent to the mound.
American White Pelican 1 with the spoonbills, stork & ibises in the small pond near to Coburn Road. It also flew to an island to in the middle of the main pond when's mower disturbed the area.

Comments: Species seen on the road after leaving the airport, many in flocks apparently flying to roosts as dusk descended.
Weather: bright, sunny, warm.

Anhinga 1 female (non-breeding) on stump in a roadside swamp.
Great Egret 1 over the road.
Cattle Egret 1 non-breeding perched in carpark when nearing Eden Drive.
White Ibis X - many over the road in 3s & 4s, distinctive, life-tick.
Glossy Ibis X - large flocks over the road, distinctive, life-tick.
Black Vulture 3 total, first two flying/soaring with shallow dihedral then one atop a telegraph pole at the side of the highway. Life-tick.
Sandhill Crane 3 approx. glimpsed on a roadside lake from the highway. Unmistakable, life-tick.
