A trip back to the UK and I swung by a raptor watch-point and saw regular farmland species.

Friday 3rd, Burnham Market, Norfolk, UK.

Once back in the US I arranged a trip to Plymouth Airport for myself after speaking with the airport manager. I had read about specialist grassland species and hoped to see a few. I was rather later after the official BBC walk in May but figured these were breeding species and I might still have a chance to see some of them. I ended seeing only one of my target species, life-tick, VESPER SPARROW. However I had an enjoyable trip and I resolved to come again with the official trip the next year in the hope of picking up the ones I missed out on.

Monday 13th, Plymouth Airport, MA, USA.

I had a trip to the UK where I visited Hunstanton Cliffs and saw the resident Northern Fulmar and some passage Northen Gannet.

Wednesday 3rd, Hunstanton Cliffs, Norfolk, UK.

I also visited RSPB Titchwell where I walked the new East Trail for the first time. Among the 53 species I saw the most notable where 1 flyover Eurasian Spoonbill, 4 Curlew Sandpiper, 1 Spotted Redshank and 3 Little Stint. The stint were a site-tick and maybe even a life-tick.

Friday 6th, RSPB Titchwell, Norfolk, UK.

On returning to the US I didn’t make any patch visits but did hear another Eastern Screech Owl at home on the 21st.

Comments: A trip to try for hawfinch although I was leaving it late. No hawfinches in the end but as I returned I took some time to walk along a small creek off to the side of the main arboretum which took me past a small damp hollow where there was some great activity & I picked up some nice woodland species. Past the hollow I passed an area of large dense bushes where a gentleman birder informed me he'd often seen firecrest. Although I didn't see any there I probably saw one in the hollow. Overall the day was a lovely early spring day with the birdlife responding with signs of exuberance for the beginning of the breeding season.

Comments: Another stop with Sian, hoping to see rough-legged buzzard which had been reported here recently. Ended up a nice walk with views to Scolt Head, & my first visit to this location.

Merlin 1 flew rapidly across the road & into a nearby field. Fortunately we were able to pull off the road & have a look at the bird as it perched on a tree. Unfortunately it flew off before I could get the 'scope setup but it's quickness & smallness made me think 'merlin' straightaway.
