Olmsted Park--Willow Pond and Meadow, Suffolk, MA, USA, 29-Jun-2013

6:55 PM - 7:16 PM
Protocol: Traveling
0.5 mile(s)
Comments: Second part of a small patch visit. Even more mozzies at this part of the park so I quickly walked through, but on the way back I had a nice surprise.
6 species

Mallard 5 including 4 chicks.

Black-crowned Night-Heron 1 adult. As I walked back towards to Leverett Pond a man was crouched taking photos of what I assumed was the reflection in one of the pools. As I got closer I saw he was actually photographing this heron which was close to the path. It soon flew off as it saw me, but after briefly updating the finder as to what it was, I walked round the other side of the pond where I watched it from near the road. Resplendent in breeding plumage it was motionless for a long while but when a mallard family bustled through it flew off to Leverett Pond where I did not see it again when I walked back that way. Site-tick.

American Robin X
Song Sparrow 1 heard singing in the meadow.
Red-winged Blackbird X
Common Grackle X
